Discount Rate

The interest rate that commercial banks and other financial institutions pay to the Federal Reserve Bank for short-term loans is referred to as the “discount rate.” At the Fed’s lending facility, referred to as the discount window, the discount rate is put into effect. In the context of discounted cash flow analysis (DCF), a discount rate can also be used to describe the interest rate used to calculate the present value of future cash flows.
