The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol now known as Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol is used to create secure connections between networked computers. Even though TLS 1.0 replaced the SSL protocol, the terms “SSL” and “SSL/TLS” are still frequently used to describe these related technologies.
